The first thing that I noticed as we walked into the room where Jen had booked the shower were the beautiful tables covered in linen. People were milling about setting tables and preparing the buffet.

That’s when it hit me…

This is really happening.

A bridal shower for my baby girl.

It was a moment.

Then it was time to get to work.

The first things that we unpacked were the boxes and bags of candy that we had been stockpiling for over a month.

I was so looking forward to having a candy bar at Aria’s shower.

It was at my niece’s baby shower that I was first introduced to the concept of a “Candy Bar,” which really captured my imagination.

How glorious it was to have been given a small sack and then to fill it with white chocolate bark, jelly beans, sugared pretzel sticks and a cake pop.

Jen agreed to make the cake pops, and I had resolved to hunt down all the jelly beans, chocolates, ju-jubes, toffee, and lollipops, and let us not forget the bomboniere, or more commonly known as candy coated almonds.

Almost as much fun as hunting down the candy was stalking the store shelves for decorative containers to display our tasty treats. Our favourites were the retro clear glass jars, just like the ones I remember as as a child when I visited the five and dime store.

Jen and Chantel, one of the bridesmaids had volunteered their Victorian cup and saucers sets for added decor.

I can’t believe the fun we had in setting it up.

Even more astounding, is the fact that virtually all the candies arrived at the shower intact and unmolested.

Except of course for a bag of strawberry jujubes that I had commandeered during a weak moment while watching Turkish travel documentaries with Richard Ayoade.

As Jen and I were finally placing the finishing touches to the candy bar, we both stepped back and took in the vision before us.

Willy Wonka would have been proud.

And so, it came to pass that my daughter, the bride to be, flew home from where she and her partner live in Winnipeg. We had roughly a week to nail down her wedding plans for this September before she flew back.

Our check list included ordering the wedding cake, visiting the reception hall, seeing the officiant, the bachelorette party, consultation with the photographer, choosing centrepieces, and of course, the wedding shower.

Busy, busy, busy.

That is why after announcing a two week sabbatical at work from my job in order to attend to the wedding plans I told my coworkers that the next time they see me, I’ll be either very happy or very cranky.

There is no middle ground.

You can therefore understand when I tell you that I keep a bottle of ant-nausea pills within reach for those over-the-top moments when our nerves overrule “the better angels of our nature.”

This past Sunday my daughters and I went to a local shopping mall, the Pen Centre as we embarked on our first wedding shopping extravaganza.

We were on a quest for shower decorations and wedding attire.

However, we came home with shopping bags bursting with planting pots, candy, sushi, and a Doctor Who Bobble Head.

Some things never go according to plan.

Three days later, we tried again.

This time, we went to the Fairview Mall.

Again, we came home with full shopping bags and this time they were full of items appropriate for those who are about to throw a wedding shower extravaganza. However, our mood was somewhat disgruntled after an emotional discussion during lunch at a local pizzeria as we tried to reach some sort of agreement on bridesmaids dresses.

When I got home, I realized I was all out of anti-nausea pills…

…And the wedding is still over three months away.

My first memories of colours, candy, and candy colours were the lollipops that were dispensed by my doctor after every visit.

I was a very young four years old when my doctor would always ask after each visit:

“And what colour of lollipop would you like?”

I was so young at that time I had not yet learned about colours and their different names.

Getting no answer, the doctor then assuming that I had no preference always went to the default colour…

…green.

Obviously, everyone went for the red and the purple ones.

Hence, there was always an over abundance of green lollipops in his lollipop bowl.

Little did he know that I didn’t care for green lollipops.

I had absolutely had my fill of them.

All I ever got was green lollipops.

And finally one day at nursery school I finally began to understand what the word “colour” was all about.

I even learned the name of a color and save this epiphany for my next trip to the doctor.

At long last game the day when once again took me for a visit to the doctor.

I eagerly waited for the moment he would ask me what color of lollipop I would like to have.

When he finally held the bowl out to me he asked what color lollipop I would like,

I looked into his eyes and said…

“Green.”

It’s hard to describe how utterly heartbroken I was when I was handed yet another green lollipop.

“And what do you say for the lollipop?”

Mother asked me as I took the ugly green lollipop from the doctor…

“Thank you,” I said trying to muster a smile.

1st life lesson learned by me in 1963 as my Mother drove me home while I enjoyed my green lollipop:

What’s the big deal about adults and colour?

… Because even green lollipops can taste wonderful.

The clock radio read 6:30 a.m. As we closed our hotel room door shut to head downstairs to the lobby.

Today was our last day trip which would take us to Hadrian’s Villa and Tivoli Gardens.

It was with great trepidation that another cab was ordered to take us to the Appian Line bus terminal.

You might remember me telling you of our horrific cab ride two days earlier when we went to Florence.

Thankfully, this cab and its driver were much, much kinder.

Frank gave him a five euro tip as well. After my last experience, I thought he deserved more. I am so mystified as to how two cab trips to the same destination could be so different.

And so, we arrived at the bus station at 7:a.m., right on schedule.

Well, Frank’s schedule that is because, as it turns out we were one and a half hours early, as the bus tour was not scheduled to leave until 8:30 a.m.

That meant a trip to the coffee shop around the corner from the bus station.

A last hurrah of sorts.

Six coffees, two Danish and an orange juice later we emerged happy and well coffeed.

We returned to the bus station with still almost an hour left.

Once again I found myself sitting in the bus terminal lobby getting caught up on my writing.

I was on my third page when my eyes started to wander to the vending machine next to me.

It was interesting to try to figure out what was inside the colourful packages behind the glass.

Please refer to the photo above and let me know what you think these two packages hold.

I must say that the package with the little green blobs had me intrigued the most.

Looking back, I wish I would have forfeited my loose Italian change to this machine.

Next time I will.

I’ve just got to know what those little green blobs are all about…
